Why Marble and Limestone Might Be Wrong For Your Bathroom
Marble and Limestone are soft stones and therefore very absorbent. If you were to dye your hair in a shower finished with these stones, the dye could stain the shower floor. Many people choose a durable porcelain tile to compliment marble/limestone for this very reason.
These soft stones often contain more veining, and when they do, veining often indicates a higher iron content, causing the stone to change in appearance over time. The stones contain minerals, and there’s always the risk that the iron content will turn to rust in a bathroom. A beautiful installation can be ruined when the iron buried deep within the stone discolors from humidity and moisture.
Marble and Limestone are easily etched by acidic materials such as lemon and certain cleaning products. Lotions and other bath supplies, soaps and shampoos, can cause reactions to the surface of the stone. For this reason marble and limestone may not be the best choice for the bathroom.
Marble and Limestone, including all other natural stones, should be sealed with a high quality sealer and maintained on a regular basis. Avoid using strong cleansers (nothing acid based) to prevent etching or damage to the stone.
